Blogger, Niche Thy Domain Name

Posted in February 11th, 2008

Nothing is worse than starting an online business and finding that your domain name is really not suitable for your Internet business positioning. If you are trying to establish yourself on the Internet spend some time and effort coming up with a good domain name - it should help you position yourself easier.Bad domain names can even lead to interesting articles about your own domain name. You really do not need to be called Apple when you are selling oranges do you ?

It is a bit late to change the domain name here and anyway I like it as it makes my point. However it would have been wise to read on how to choose a domain name for your blog and domain name ideas before messing up everything before this blog even started. Before you start screaming about failing in blogging as I did, you can learn the easier way by avoiding the same mistakes I made with this particular blog.

1. Find a domain name high in the alphabet.

domain names I seem to remember peoples names starting with A, B or C and somehow when you list your website in all those directories, the scripts list them alphabetically too. I think that is alphabetical profiling but what do I know. Even in trade shows where you hope one day to sell your Internet business, they list you alphabetically.

Going for numbers is not a good idea seeing how people are so tired of numbers they just use speed dial on their phones. If you can avoid those X and Z’s it would really help people like me who always lose in scrabble any time we get those letters.

2. Domain Names with Verb Potential

godaddy2 Mywaytosucess is not and can not be a verb. It’s too long .It is not doing anything (well just yet ). Try to look for domain names that have no more than 2 or 3 syllables.

You do not need to find domain names that are not easy to pronounce in whatever language. A good name has no language eg Google

For my other websites I am using this rule of thumb. I have the idea and try to finish this sentence with the idea

“————- it “

Then go to nameboy and try to find a good domain name based on the idea. Try it, it more fun than finding mywaytosucess and even getting the spelling wrong.

3. Avoid Trends in Domain names

Nothing is worse than seeing the word “_____blog” after every name. Maybe we should all name our sites “somethingwebsite” Can you imagine how you would feel if you went to buy a “CocaColafizzledrink” or an “ipodsmallshufflingmusicdevice” ? Or even MyWayToSucess.com ? What was I thinking ?I can’t even spell it and I own it.

duck In trading when you find the trend, you are already too late. So going for trendy domain names or even trendy niches might not make your site endure for ages. Following like a duck in naming your domain should be saved for finding features in what you have. A good example is “jiffylube” ,”youtube” etc. What they do is in their names and notice the syllable count.

Good luck to you and remember a domain name will last with you forever . Just like it is not a good idea to name your kid Michael Jackson, it’s also not a good idea to name your website Mywaytosucess.com

I enjoyed reading the article “…Thy Domain Name.” I have a blog about starting an internet business and publish the WAHM (Work At Home-Make Money) Newsletter. I am often questions about choosing the right domain name. I especially appreciated this, “You do not need to find domain names that are not easy to pronounce in whatever language. A good name has no language eg Google” I have a domain called wahmm.com.
