Effective Blog Commenting
One of the ways that a blogger can increase both his readership and also backlinks to his website is by commenting on other blogs. Bloggers have found out that they can comment on other blogs to create both a name for themselves and also have a loyal following. The D-List is one example of such a group of bloggers.
A post at a popular blog can cause a tsunami of comments that can go in any direction . The sad thing is that in most blogs after reading the main topic, I really am interested in reading dissenting or agreeing replies. After all a blog is meant to be a way for people to share ideas. For small bloggers like me, it may take a long while before one can get the number of comments that other big blogs get in a topic. However getting comments on out blogs is not the main thing we are after as new bloggers. We are first trying to create relationships with other bloggers so that we can grow in our blogging business.
I have found out that some of the blog comments I click on to follow someone’s blog have a few similarities and these are the main things I look for in a blog comment before I even read it.
1. Stay on Topic
If we are talking about Google page ranks falling or rising, why are you telling us about the new blog you just started and you need a wordpress plugin for google? However some blog comments are a bit too slick when it comes to staying on topic. An answer like " me too" , is on topic but really…..As a blog owner you might think that someone has gone down the D-list to get some 200 backlinks in about 10 minutes. Clever but the blog owner might ban you for spamming.
Staying on topic actually is hard work and that is why you need to look for blogs that interest you to comment on. I really do not expect a comment on a pay per post advertisement.
2. Use Language others can understand
One of the biggest problems with blogs especially blogs with templates is seeing a blog comment in Italian while the post itself was in English. Now why then was the post in English? I don’t know Italian and for all I know , it might be a new phising program out there. This is especially for those with template sites. I have refused to download otherwise very good templates because the designer decided to only take comments and bug issues in another language. I think if one spent 5 minutes at any webmaster forum, that could be resolved.
Use terms that people can understand. I know most of us are not very good in slang and getting comments in slang or even with horrible punctuation will not endear me to come to your blog. If in a 40 word comment you can not write proper english, why should I think that a 500 word blog will be better?
3. Make Polite Comments
Note I did not say agree to everything that the blogger has said, I just said be polite in your comments. Remember that technically you are in the bloggers house. How would you like it if someone came into your house and started calling you names. I know in forums this is a common habit, but taking it to some elses blog is being a bit not clever. I for one would not like to be in the middle of a shouting match. I have enough political pundits on fox tv to fill my non-civility cup.
Agreeing willy nilly with the blogger on a topic he is obviously wrong in is also not being polite. Actually it is outright boring and I can not be bothered to come to your blog to see what you have to say since you already agree with the current blogger.
Some of the questions I ask myself before commenting anywhere are very simple
- What is the main point the blogger is trying to convey and do I agree with it ?
- What did I like most about the blog post and why ?
- What did I like least about the blog post and why ?
- After reading the blog post, what is the one question I really would like the author to answer?
- If I were to add something to the blog post, what would it be ?
I have actually discovered that I do get a bit of traffic from the one or two blog comments I have left elsewhere and will actually start using comments on other blogs as a true traffic method. However for now the first goal is to create relationships with other bloggers like me so please do comment here too. Who knows , I might actually like your comment and start visiting your site more often.

I like it! So many people don’t realize that being polite can help you to build relationships. Being rude will destroy your chance to build relationships.
Well said!
