I Blogged Myself to Poverty
I have suffered already from the biggest mistake that bloggers make with their sites. However how do you learn if you are always right? I am about to get tired with blogging because I think someone is trying to play games with my head.
I have tried to work on this site with the right rules. eg, post everyday, don’t post everyday, post consistently, post sometimes etc. Don’t you just get tired blogging according to someone else’s rules ? I have worked so hard to try to come up with the right formulae to make me a million dollar blogger. However, I have found myself in a situation where blogging becomes a job that is not paying.
I have been told to post one blog per day to succeed. But I have to work everyday. I get so tired after working , by the time I get home, a blog post is not really one of the things I want to do. I just want to watch American Idol ( I’d rather be laughing at someone else). Who really want’s to write another 10 best ways I hate my wife blog post?
I have been told to bookmark at all the social networks. That was a great idea until I found out that there more than 100 social networks and I really don’t like meeting people I don’t like or don’t ever want to know.Who really enjoys stumbling after a hard day at work listening to people who you think are fools anyway ? Some of the people I have met in these social networks are either ugly or can’t speak english. I’m I supposed to like them just because I want to be a successful blogger?
Now look for back links or link backs. What the hell are back links ? If you post a good article, people will link back to you. Really? How come I have never linked back to a good article? Oh you are told to link to directories, I don’t even remember going to a directory. Oh post in article directories . Do you really expect me to write another post after this one has taken me 1 month to write? Who really likes posting their link to a web directory? Why should I comment in your blog if I don’t read it anyway ? I am tired driving back to my house , why should I even be looking for people I don’t like?
Oh boy blogging is becoming rather hard for me.
Then I have to moneytize my site ? I go to work and get $25 an hour. I blog and make $5 a month with google adwords. That is such a difficult decision. $25 per hour vs $5 per month. If I blog for the next 10 yrs I shall earn less than my milk money. However I am going to be a million dollar blogger so let me quit my job today and make my money tomorrow. I am just joking.
I can assure you that there are times I wake up and see my blog and want to run. Someone please tell me the secret.

thats why people suggest you work on your blog part time till you are earning a lot from it… Also thats way there is so much being done with assistants and out sourcing.
But your right it can be daunting to start up.

How long have you had your blog for? It looks like a good blog and you are offering good information. I know all the social bookmarking sites can be a pain, I don’t usually submit my posts to all the sites, I just pick one or two for each post. It does get quite time consuming by the time you write the post, submit it to social bookmarking sites and then possibly submit your article to article directories. Sometimes I will try and do four or five posts in one hit then I can miss a day or two.
Good Luck!

Hi Tony, recently I posted an article on my blog in which I revealed my theory as to the ’secret’ of successful blogging. Basically it boiled down to state of mind - if you are feeling happy and positive within yourself then it will show through in your writing and if not then your negativity will show through too.
Throw out the rule book! Do just what *you* feel like doing, not what somebody else tells you to do. It sounds like perhaps you are reading too many other blogs and getting bogged down in the advice that everybody is giving out. Try perhaps just isolating yourself from the rest of the blogosphere for a week and totally doing your own thing. Write when you want to write, if you don’t feel likt it then don’t. If you like a social network use it, if not, don’t. Etc etc.
Good luck!

If blogging is a job that isn’t paying it might be to get out. You aren’t going to learn the things you need to be a million dollar blogger if you hate it. It’s what Caroline said, you can’t be negative.
I could give you quite a bit of advice. For instance, your “about Tony” link seems more “about this site” and doesn’t look like it’s been run through a spell checker (”proffession”).
Don’t bookmark all the social networks… I would just stick to StumbleUpon and Reddit. You’ll do better with these if you get some friends who will help you vote up your posts in exchange for you voting up there posts.
Post when you have something worthwhile to post… I would aim for at least 2-3 days a week. Perhaps write them on the weekend and schedule them to post through the week.
Directories… I find it’s best to ignore them, I never get traffic from them.
Blogrolls… What does the Kenyan Community have to do with the content that you write about? Why not link to other people with similar blogs. It helps your readers and they’ll be more likely to write you.
“How come I have never linked back to a good article?” Because you don’t want to be a million dollar blogger?
“Why should I comment in your blog if I don’t read it anyway?” Start reading people’s blogs and then comment as necessary.
In the end, being a great blogger is about 80% content and 20% marketing. Make sure you are writing the most interesting content (the title of this post was awesome and got me to read the whole article). Consider the rest, commenting, linking, blogrolls, talking to other bloggers in your niche offline (e-mail, IM) the marketing part.
No one is going to just give you a million dollars to blog, you have to earn it by being one of the best bloggers in your niche. If you just want to watch American Idol, then you won’t be one of the best bloggers.

Caroline pretty much nailed it in her comment.
I have been running my site, elitebydesign.com for 3 months now, and even with low to moderate traffic, I have made almost $200 is private advertising alone. I have never once used adsense. Ads are just pennies though in the grand scheme of things. You can’t put all your eggs in one basket.
As much as I am not a fan of John Chow, he does have a point: You have to branch out and market yourself in more ways than one. If you rely solely on adsense and adwords, you will never be able to accumulate a good source of income.
Personally, I’m not blogging for money. I am blogging for growth and to get my web design business known. Perhaps you should try and create a service or product for people to buy and use this blog as a conversion tool rather than the money maker.
For example, I am selling the wordpress theme that is in use at elitebydesign.com. Using an e-junkie account, I have automated the process of people being able to buy my theme. This has brought in some great revenue and I don’t even have to do any work!
Maybe you could start a service. I do web design work for people. During my first month of my blog, I got one client. Second month, probably around 3. Yesterday I got 4 emails asking me to do work.
My point is, again, you gotta branch out and try different methods of making money. That is the only way to make money and have fun at the same time.
Anybody have anything to add to this or disagree with me on any points?
Loool, man that was so funny, it all sounds so familiar. I’m sure most bloggers went through such experiences and many never came over it.
This is the only post I read on your blog (I came here from Optempo), I found your post funny, honest and familiar … maybe you can make this your new Niche! (blogging about how blogging Sucks!)
Blogging is useless in two ways: if you blog for money but make $5 a month or you blog for socializing but have 50 visits a week.
Good luck to you!

Hi everyone,
I have to admit I never expected to see such a response to this post.
I have read all the comments and posts here and I know that it is true what you have all written.
However, there seems to be a problem as the hits on this particular post are just amazing to say the least. I wrote the post tongue in cheek but it seems there is really a problem with the blogging business . You are right Y.S. there might be a niche here. Oops there I go again telling all my secrets.
I always read your blog Caroline and I totally agree with the idea that a blog should be fun first otherwise it’s doomed for failure.
I really appreciate all the comments on this post. I will follow all the ideas here . Please do not hate me if I do sound a bit negative sometimes. I am bound to and at the same time, I am very very serious about making this blog a success.
Hi
You must be doing something right to get so many comments!!

I give blogging my part time as it needs too effort and time to submit your posts to social bookmarking sites and getting more backlinks to get high ranks on search engines.

I know the feeling. Currently, because I moved to a new city for my spouses relocation, I’m not working. I have tons of time to do all the things that you mentioned and I like doing it. However…the money isn’t rolling in. not even a trickle. Oh well…even if I don’t become a millionaire, I like it.
