Top 10 Reasons I Hate Top 10 Lists

I am not alone as a new blogger who has been advised to write a top 10 least. I have been told that Google just loves top 10 lists. So because it’s Easter and I feel a bit nice, I decided to write my own top 10 list. That is when all the problems began. I really tried hard to come up with my first top 10 list of something but somehow all I could come up with is the top 10 reasons I really hate top 10 lists.

1. Relevant topic

I have to find a relevant topic to write about. Hmm. What do I like that other people might find interesting ? I could write about my beer, but it’s not in keeping with my serious business blog. I could write about my wife, but it’s easier to find 20 reasons I hate about her. Anyway, I can’t imagine why anyone would like her.

I am already failing in finding a top 10 topic that is relevant to my site. That list will make no impression to anyone.

2. Research the Topic

Oh boy, here we go again. I am too old to be reading all the time. I just can’t escape the need to do research on any topic I post on my blog. I thought top 10 lists were easy to create.

My first idea was to list that I like beer in my top 10 things I like. Something, however, was nagging me at the back of my head asking me funny questions like why, which one, when, can you prove it, what is the source ? Now that requires some research and all I wanted was to list a list.

Guess I have to go do some more research on the reasons I hate top 10 lists.

3. Writing the Top 10 List

Is it me or do top 10 lists seem to be longer than anything else you have ever posted? It’s just a list isn’t it? One line per idea. How come you end up writing so much more in a good top 10 list than in all your other posts?

It does take a rather long time to write a good top 10 list ,so you had better be ready to spend a little longer time than you think. However, if you wrote about the top 10 list of the things that you hate, somehow that works faster than you might imagine. Like this post.

4. Who Reads Top 10 Lists?

boring list I once saw a top 123 reasons why…..list. Let us be honest with ourselves. I really have no time or inclination to read 123 reasons for anything. I already have an issue trying to figure out one reason why I woke up this morning.

If you can show me one human being who has read more than the ten reasons for anything list, I will show you someone who has no kids screaming about the latest fashion. I know Google loves 1000 reasons, but I hate them. It is rather boring reading some lists and yawning is all you can do.

Please keep them short.

5. Subtopics in Top 10 Lists

Ok now I have decided I might want to read your top 50 list. Why do you have to torture me with 3 more bullet points for each topic? Would it not be easier to create a top 10 list of the top 10 list instead of giving me another semi top 10 list.

You see I am even confused about what I have written .

Please for my sanity, keep the top 10 list true and don’t have semi top 10’s.

6. What is Wrong With a Paragraph?

I have read some lists that should really be paragraphs in a very well written article instead of lists.

I can hear someone telling me that people have short memories and need lists instead of paragraphs. I can not complain about that as I don’t know the people you know. The people I know read newspapers and books and other printed material. Can you imagine if you read a Steven King novel where he listed all paragraphs as bullet points? Or read the New York Times in bullet point.

There is a time and a place for everything . Not all posts on your site need to be top 10 of anything.

7. Unfinished Top 10 List

So I have created my list but somehow, I am so tired of reading it, I just can not finish it. I became depressed at number 5 and just find another 3 reasons to add to my list.

I’m I the only one who decided to come up with a top 10 list then just can not add anything after number 5?

Next time I will do a top 25 list. That way I will be able to come up with the top 10 reasons I really hated to write this post.
