Using Joomla As A Blog
One way to find financial sucess online is to decided on what cms blog platform you are going to use for your online business. Trying to decide between Joomla vs WordPress was rather difficult as both cms blogs have their own attributes.
The biggest issue I had with Joomla was that turning Joomla into a blog needed some work while WordPress was an out of the box blogging solution.Trying to find anything from mambo user guides or Joomla user guides was not helping. However as part of the reason why my business exists, I decided Joomla was more conducive to growing my Internet business over the long run.
I do not wish to blog forever and neither do I wish to have to create domains and sub domains to deal with new scripts that I can not automatically add to my blog. Joomla as a content management system is just perfect for adding new functions to your web site .
The Joomla component list is a gold mine for any Joomla web developer. The first step was to change the basic Joomla functionality into a Joomla blog system.
When setting up a Joomla blog, these are some of the Joomla blogging components you may choose from.
1. Joomla Blogging Components
The easiest way to convert Joomla into a blog is to use Joomla blogging components. The top Joomla blogging components I have seen are
- mojoBlog -
This is based on WordPress and is similar if not a continuation of Marko Schmuck’s older com_jd-wp. It is very easy to use being based on WordPress. However, I had problems when there were times I could not login to the component to post .There was also an issue with SEO friendly URL’s . That was some time ago and knowing the developer of this component, I am sure these issues may have been dealt with. - JooBlog - This is the new developer in town and the component is just an all in one blog and you do not need to add anything to it. It worked fine on setup on one of my test sites. I actually have very little to say about this Joomla blog component. It just worked. However please note that it can only be used in the new Joomla 1.5 version.
- MyBlog! -
It was my first Joomla Blog Component and it works as advertised. It is very well supported but it has to be since it costs about $35 .The only issue I had with it was the rss function. Since it somehow posted only one line rss entries I had an issue with that. But a solution was found later using a beautiful rss component below.
So if you wish to have a Joomla Blog extension, you have 3 good choices above. My sites do not even look like Joomla when I am finished with them.
2. Using Joomla Content System As a Blog
If there is one thing I do not like doing ,is having too many components on my site. It gets harder to organize and manage the site. So if I can avoid using a blog component I do. For example the new Joomla version 1.5 is just excellent without the need for a blog component.
It is very simple to make your articles appear as blog posts. Just follow the method to make your own Joomla blog.
- Create a Section which you will use only use for blogging. I like to do this because as the site grows, you might need to add other items to your Joomla site. Just click on Section and create your section.
- Create the your Joomla blog categories that you will be using under the section above. Just click on Categories Manager and create them under the section you named above.
- Click on Menu Manager and create a New Menu. I prefer a new menu as it’s easier to manage in the long run. However in our case just use “other menu”.
- Now the important part.Hover over the menu tab and click on “other menu” .From the list you get, Click on New .
-
You will get the following screen . Click on Category Blog Layout. You will then be led to the next page where you can configure your blog as you wish. You can choose what to name the category on the other menu. From the basic parameters, you can choose the category you wish . Do not forget to list your category as a blog. I use the following setup Layout 1, Intro 4, Columns 1( this is the most important) , and Links 4.
You are all set , you now have a Joomla cms blog. Next we shall discuss the components you will need to use to make your Joomla blog work just like WordPress.
